03 The Geography of a Border: Sangatte
This refugee camp, run by the French Red Cross, is located in a 25.000 sqm former industrial hall on the fringes of the village Sangatte, 6 km of Calais and 3 km of the entrance to the Channel Tunnel. The area and the 400 m long access road are fenced off. Inside the hall about 40 container homes and military tents are set up on the concrete floor, housing between 1400 and 1600 refugees. Sangatte is a transit space for illegalized migration to Great Britain and starting point of many attempts to cross the Channel via ferry or through the tunnel.
